View Full Version : sucky songs
has your band ever written a song that every one else in the band loves but you think sucks to no end? and you seem to play it at every gig and you have to suffer through it every time. or, if you're in a cover band, do you cover a song that you can't stand?

Hell yeah. When I was in a funk/metal/hardcore band, my drummer would always write these simple poppy punk songs that everyone seemed to love but I hated them because they were so shallow and simple.
I hear you bro....I feel your pain
i remember having to play devils haircut over and over. I didnt think it sounded anything like the original and it drove me insane...for some reason the drummer really enjoyed playing it....prolly becuase he was the only one that would sing it and it gave him some mic time....there was times when I wanted to hurt him very badly

I've done the same thing. In my last band, I wrote alot of stuff because the drummer that we were playing with was into more pop influenced music. So, to make him happy, I played that sorta stuff. When he flaked out and we gave him the boot, the bass player and I, who had similar tastes in music, decided to take a different direction. Since we were still shopping for a drummer, I decided to go ahead and write some new stuff. When we found a new drummer, the bass player wanted to show him all of the old stuff. What gives? I've got all of this new music written that I'm actually excited about and I have to play those crap pop songs just so we can start gigging sooner?
Well, I had a simple answer to that...
NO! We're not settling for these other songs and then changing formats in the middle of things. How stupid is that?
Ya gotta wonder what's going through peoples minds sometimes.

Every song that we played. This was in my old band, when I played drums. I don't think I liked a single song we did. I liked playing a few of them, but couldn't stand listening to them. Cover songs? We did a Black Crows song and a cover of a cover: Knockin' on Heaven's Door. God I hated it. How did I suffer through it for 4 years?

I'm not in a band but every Friday I jam with this singer friend of mine for fun and we allways have to play "Turn the Page" by Bob Segar. I hate it but I give it my all each time we do it. It's a good song for singers but pretty boring for a guitar player.
play metallica's version of 'turn the page'. its alot more fun:)
yep. i did this lick on my acoustic guitar--had a slide down the neck with some harmonics that my band loved. I played it on my electric, sounded stupid, but my band ran with it, had a really dumb keyboards on it.
really it was kinda jamming, but i didn't like it, and they loved it.

O man, In my last band our singer and rythym guitarist (a good friend of mine too) wrote a song called "Please". It was about him leaving for college and telling his girlfriend who is still in High school, to not forget their "love" (they had been together for a month). The entire song was completely full of ****, and the worst part was that it was comprised of four chords G - E Minor - C - and D, and it was 7 minutes long. Even worse, he insisted that we play it LAST at every show!!! Luckily, I threw in some fairly nice soloing, but even that could'nt mask what was an incredible display of redundant cliches and pure BS. And by some magical stroke of luck, at the last show we ran out of time and couldn't play it! Oh well...
