Hello,

I have just found these forums and was doing some research on some equipment. Now I have decided to try and get some specific advice. A friend and I have just been playing around in my basement and decided that it was about time to record some stuff. I have a bunch of equipment and I want to record some guitar, vocals and bass, perhaps all in one shot. Here is some of my stuff. http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/bhkingsley/My%20Gear/ I would probably mix this out to my MacBook in GarageBand. If someone could give me some advice on the best way to set my stuff up, I would appreciate it. I tried some stuff the other day, but got some horrible feedback. I don't know if it was because I had so many connections to my pedalboard or if I just have some bad chords in the mix.

Welcome to Guitargeek!

Try just recording a test vocal track (i.e.) 'test one two' to get used to how your setup works. Multitrack recording (2 to the computer) is easy enough but you might try getting used to constructing songs on overdubs especially if it is generally just you available as personnel.

I create a suitable drum track put it down, then record a guide rhythm guitar and a guide vocal, then two double tracked guitar copies, the final vocal, the double tracked vocal, vocal overdub harmonies (sometimes a stupid number of tracks/double tracks).

Now comes the Bass guitar, The solo guitar(s) and any guitar fills, keyboard parts as necessary, then I write the final drum part sequence and mix it all together. Last but not least comes Mastering but for now just get that simple test vocal track to work!

tl;dr

Start simple.
Then consider your optimal workflow.

The trick that I've found to recording is to mess around with it. Vocals are easy to screw around with, but each instrument will probably warrant some guess n' test.
