Fripp's New Standard Tuning
Low to high: CGDAEG
Ok so what do you think? I know its old by now, its basically a cello-plus-2-strings tuning but its quite interesting.

Crafty guitarists do always eat good.
I respect mr. Fripp for trying stuff like this, I personally lack the guts to try it out, but I don't really see the point apart from making bigger intervals easier. Have you tried it yourself?

Well, I see it more useful than just bigger intervals, it breaks your habits and take you somewhere else, for chords its so weird, everything you play sound weird but in fact, I think the real thing is master it and make it sound normal.

Altered tunings & alternatives
I dig altered tunings especially with fingerstyle stuff. I have done some cool things in DADGAD, DADFAD, and DADF#AD. I especially liked DADGAD and found some cool things in my lead work as well as fingerstyle playing.
Recently I found some really great sounds using a Shubb Partial Capo. It covers either strings 4,5,6 or 2,3,4. Using it at the second fret, covering strings 2,3,4, in standard tuning, you get an A Major chord open, but you don't have to re-learn a whole bunch of new chords as any barre chords below the second fret are exactly the same. It comes down to different use of open strings in different keys which is great for fingerstyle. From a composing stand point, you basically can tap into other keys but still utilize more open strings. If Fripp finds new sounds with his new tuning...awesome. |

I'm struggling enough as it is, don't need new tunings to make it more difficult.
I'll stick to standard and open tunings, thanks.

Well, Fripp's ideology behind it all was that it made more sense. It's tuned in fifths primarily instead of fourths, making it fit in with most of the other stringed instruments. In a way it does make sense, but I'm with you, everything else I know/want to know is mostly based off of tuning the guitar in fourths.

That's the first thing I thought when I saw it. I imagine that I might find it useful, since cello was my first instrument.

Oh, now I think of it, Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls has the weirdest tuning I know of, every string is tuned to a b. Sorry if I sound harsh or something.

I generally only find that I use alternate tunings if I want to learn a song that's in one. Other than that, I'm in standard or drop-D 90% of the time

Set up my tele for this tuning today. Had to combine two different sets of strings to do it to adjust for the different string tension, but I made it work. I didn't have much time to play around with it before work, so I'll probably do some noodling tonight and tomorrow.
My first impression is that it's definitely interesting. None of my learned left-hand (fretting hand) techniques work, so it should be fun to figure it all out.

Wasn't there an actual thing called 'new standard tuning' of CFCGBE. Dropping just the bottom three strings? Soundgarden's song 4th of July is in that tuning. Creepy damn song, but eerily beautiful.
I've always wanted to put a guitar into a dulcimer tuning I once played. BBBG or something along those lines...
