ampeg ss 150/70

ive been looking into getting an ampeg ss-150, because ive grown to like the solid state crunch and allot of my favorite bands use 'em (so i atleast have one good reason)

ive come across a lower power rated ampeg ss-70, and that would be hella perfect because i definatly do not need 150 watts for my garage band!

are they the same amp at differant wattages? are they different in every way? how many mojo points have i gone down for giving in to the solid state relm of guitar amps?

I hate that when people hear "solid state" they immediately think crappy tone.

ANYWAY. I'm about 80% sure that all of the blue faceplate SSs are the same preamp with varying wattages. I really love my SS140c through vintage 30s, it's a great sound, but mine doesn't have as much gain as you would think from hearing stuff like Suffocation, Eyehategod, Soilent Green, Gorguts etc etc. Apparently the later SSs with black faceplates have more gain? If anyone knows for sure, feel free to chime in.

i was looking into that line of amps because Suffocation has one of the greatest tones I've ever heard.
You can see it here behind mr. Hobbs - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcpVCqQT2Pc

I've read that the one with the knobs and such on the top of the amp are actually the ones used to get those tones for all those bands; but I've seen the <arshall style heads in most of the music videos and live shots.

I think I saw one in a live shot of Necrophagist as well, the Marshall-amp style.

top style- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C2WkFxxuR0

marshall style- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLci0_af9Y4

i think the amp seen here is supposed to be an exact copy of the ampegs.

Crate Gt3500h.

I also have a soft spot in my heart for the beauty of ss cleans.

The old Crate GX-130c is supposed to be somewhat similar to the SS/VHs, I know Cannibal Corpse used them on The Bleeding, at least. The newer Crate VTX 200 apparently has both (!) channels from the VH140c, as well.

I bought this amp based on the Eyehategod sound, got home and dialled it in within 2 mins. This amp is a monster for sludge...

If anyone needs the scheumatic for the SS amps, I can email you a pdf of them. It took a while for me to hunt them down so I could bring my SS-150 back to life.

I own a mid 80's Ampeg SS140C and I love it! Be careful about the years. Some have a few cold solders that can create problems. Since it should be stereo you can always unplug one speaker and play at 75 watts if 150 is too much. They have a lot of options on the back for recording and sound reenforcement. Good luck with your choice ... I am looking to get a SS140C head ... I have a combo but I would die for a head also. BTW my 140 will hang with a 5150, VTM, Mesa Mkiii, Ultra Plus and a Marshall JCM 800. Tones and volume (considering that it is solid state it sounds as close as any SS amp can to tube tone.)

the peavey supreme, XL, and XXL, are all pretty sick for a good solid state crunch that is kind of tubish. just another option. the transtube supreme head i used to have had more gain that i knew what to do with, if you want it to go that way. it did a pretty good mid gain crunch too.

Do you have or know where I can find the schem for an ss140c. I have the combo but I am sure it is the same as the head version.

Thanks

I have both the SS 150 and the VH150,
both units have their place, but i dont think you will have the volume concerns with the SS, its not nearly as loud as the VH

if your going for more metal sounds and like some thickness to your tones i'd go VH, but the SS will be a little easier for you to dial in the sludge tones you might be looking for.

Both amps are marvelous!
