BOSS RV-3 compared to BOSS RV-5 [reverbs]

How does the RV-5 compare to the RV-3 reverbs? I often use setting '11' on the RV-3 and I'm wondering if the RV-5 can do those long cold reverbs next to that awesome modulated reverb.

If so, I'm leaning towards selling my RV-3 and getting the RV-5.

i have an RV-3, and i've used RV-5s at guitar center and other shops, and in my opinion the long reverbs sound VERY fake and digital. im no audiophile, but i do know what i like.

I see. Well, I've heard the modulated reverb, only on video's and from the iLiKETRAiNS stuff [they use it quite a lot] and I really like it there. The good thing about the so called 'cold' reverb is that it cuts through the mix so well, and that's what I like in band settings.

Do you think the plate setting on the RV-3 comes close to the plate on the RV-5?

well im sure that iLiKETRAiNS EQ their reverb all to hell to get it to sound exactly like they want it. live though, you're right. it's really cold and stands out very well.
im honestly not sure about the plate settings. when i try reverb pedals i spend 95% of my time on hall.

Well, the RV-3 plate setting is quite hall-like. It's the last setting, the 11th setting on the RV-3, the most huge of all the reverbs on there.

I might just have to take the chance and get a 2nd hand one and just compare them.

To DemoColorScheme:

I own an RV-5; one of the dudes I share a rehearsal room with has an RV-3. I'll A/B 'em both this weekend and let you know what I think, if it's helpful to ya.

Lovely, mate, lovely! Especially focus on the extreme reverbs. I really don't care for the springs and the little room reverbs since my amp reverb really covers small reverb perfectly.

Again, its suposed to sound cold and digital I mean its the "Digital Reverb"!!! just change in your mind the concepts of "cold & digital" for "clean & pristine"

if looking for ****og sounding reverb get a holy grail or a reverb tank LOL... but anyway the pedal's tone knob is your friend here.

the major diff between the two, beside the mod setting, is that you cant do 100% wet reverb on the RV-5 cause it has Level control, not Balance/Mix like the RV-3 and of course, the true stereo operation.

Indeed. I don't mind it being digital at all.

Well, I'm covered here. I just use the spring reverb from my Twin Reverb and I'm really happy with that.

Well, I've never cared for 100% wet since I think it's a form of a weak swell with no definition at all. So, if what you're saying is right, that would mean they're identical, sound wise, besides the modulated reverb and the stereo in from the RV-5.

Interesting.

Well, I love the 100% wet reverb, obvious is not a standard sound, but you can do very cool tones, check the synth rhythm on the solo of "no one knows" by QOTSA to understand what I'm saying.

I guess so, they just have different features.

Boss shouldn't have discontinued the RV-3, they should have kept both on market, maybe with another name, just like they did with the SD-1, OS-2 & OD-3, they all are the same with diff features.

Well yeah, it can sound good, but for my applications I like to keep some of the dry signal [which in my case is rarely dry to begin with .. ] to keep the definition. I mostly use big reverbs for swell patches and certain melodic sections.

Well, even better; I think they should've just kept the delay section and added the new modulated reverb and THAT would've been even more interesting.

David, from iLiKETRAiNS, used an rv3 when i saw them. but i think he borrowed it off the skinny guy in Jeniferever. Soundwise, i didnt particularly notice that he wasnt using the rv5 tho, so going on that, the difference between them is not much at high volume.

having said that, you music isnt high volume, i guess if you can afford it, buy the rv5 before you sell the rv3, then sell whichever one you like less.

Well, the band I'm in IS high volume, so I have to be able to use it with both.

And I'm doing that, yeah. I've found a 2nd hand RV-5 for a reasonable price. And I'm having the RV-3 modded by Berarduur; it's gonna have a high cut switch wich is especially cool with the delays, though I don't use the delays on it at all, I might then.

Well, I got the RV-5 in today. I love it! The Modulate setting is wicked. Everything I expected. I'm now having my RV-3 modded and I've tossed the Verbzilla off from my board. Even with the tone knob all the way up, the verbs really just 'linger' around. I might just keep it around to see if I ever like it again.

I have one of those digiverbs but the volume drop is bothering me, and Boss has never failed me.

So you guys think I should send the digitech to hel and get a RV3 or 5?

Thanks.
