Recommendations needed for needed "disoriented" effect
I require a simple but tweakable chorus. I don't need the perfect chorus pedal because it will be used for some of the more extreme settings and nothing else.
I'm not interested in subtle colouration but more of a nauseous out-of-tune or disoriented effect. Less dreampop and more nightmare, so to speak. It needs to play nicely with various blends of distortion. Think the more psychedelic end of the black metal spectrum. Can the Small Clone do this or should I look at the Clone Theory or something else entirely? |

I own a Small Clone and it works good for my limited chorus needs, plus its pretty much idiot proof. For more affordable versatile chorus, I'd go with either the Clone Theory or the Hardwire CR7. If you are willing to spend the money, Red Witch's chorus sounds amazing.

The colone theory would probably get you closer than the small clone, but the EHX polychorus would be even better yet if you want extreme sounds.

The Ibanez Flying Pan FV-777 is the king of disorienting effects. Run that funky little box in stereo with it's binaural swooshes whirling around the room and it's trippy beyond belief. And after 5 minutes you'll want to hurl.

The vibrato setting (all wet signal) on the Clone Theory is trippier than regular chorus. Definitely worth a look, although the Small Clone can go extreme too. (I own both).

You can also mod the Small Clone with a “mix knob so you can have only the wet signal.

The Clone Theory does a great disorientating job - seriously extreme chorus plus vibrato. With depth all the way up and rate all the way down you get some sickening effects. They do have a reputation for being noisy and I find mine actually gives a volume boost, really significant with distortion, but it's not really a problem, especially if you're the only guitarist in a band.

I just about blew out my ears 5 minutes ago, using a cheap Arion SCH-Z chorus, routed through a feedback looper pedal. I didn't realize I had the volume of the feedback pedal all the way up when I activated everything, and it let out some crazy loud squeal.
Anyway, build a simple bypass loop pedal w/feedback option (check this out: http://www.beavisaudio.com/techpages...cker/index.htm - it's the third one on the page) and route any modulation pedal into it. I also get interesting sounds running a fuzz in the loop. Just be careful, it can get painfully loud.

+1 Polychorus
I have owned the Small Clone and the Polychorus. The Small clone is amazing, but I wouldn't say it gets extreme. It is simple to use and versatile to any musical style. Also great for mods. It would never induce vomiting though. Polychorus is just insane. The rate and depth knobs give a tremendous amount of range to deal with, in fact it goes so fast that it almost seems like the effect isnt on. There is a filter switch that adds an extra layer of swooshiness. The chorus mode has built in delay too, with delay time and feedback knobs. You can set this pedal up to self oscillate by itself. Add the fact you get a flanger, filter matrix (flanger sound that is stuck in place), and a delay (very short times). The subtle to swirly Small Clone sounds can be dialed in too. I love both of those pedals, but the Polychorus wins the whackiness contests everytime.

It's not a chorus...but the ibanez PM7 produces some of the craziest modulations I have ever heard...it's basically only good for the crazy stuff.

an effect you can run 100 % wet is what you need, although in a lot of pedals the mix knob maxed will still have some degree of dry.
A trick to combat this if your pedal has two outputs (wet/dry, not left/right) is to have your wet output continue the signal chain and have the dry out killed, so plug in something like a patch cord that dosn't go anywhere |
