Stephen Carpenter's tone

hello, i was wondering how can i get that edge that stephen carpenter gets from the album "Around The Fur". the song i was mainly looking at was "Head Up". the first heavy distorted part got me goosebumps. that is the kind of distortion i wanted. it is really heavy, and has edge on it. how i would describe it is "harsh" distorion. i was wondering if it would be posible to get somewhat of that tone with a mesa dual rec. can u also tell me around where his eq is set based on what u hear by your own ear? maybe how high the gain is too if posible? thanks guys

hmm, i'm sure there's others who know more, but i know he's big on jmp-1's into the marshall rack power amp, and uses the hyperfuzz pedal. i'm sure you could get that sound with a dual rec, though that's not what he uses. the beginning of head up is all about scooped mids.

do u know how i can get that edge on the tone where it seems like hes pushing the speakers really hard? or is that what he is doing? another example of that kind of tone i want is Daron from system of a down. i belive he uses a mesa rectifier. a really good example of the "edge" im lookin for is in the song "X" or 1:38 minutes into the song "Suggestions". im guessing that is all power tube distortion, but i really have no clue because i am a fairly new player, and very very new to tube amps. thank you

actually now that i think about it, Darons tone has more of that "edge". to me it sounds like his speakers are distorting, but i really have no idea.

if the "edge" you're talking about is what I'm thinking it is...

I have the tone knob on my guitar up all the way.

To me it sounds like yer problem lies in the guitar. That dual rec should have all the edge you need. Of coarse I'm assuming yer playin it cranked. What kinda guitar are you playin and what pickups are in it? You probably need to ajust the bridge closer to the strings to get that "edge".

You may want to look into an ADA mp1. Mr. carpenter used one of those for a while as well. I love mine.... A LOT. Really heavy distortion but I also use a mxr graphic EQ to fine tube my distortion sounds.

But before you go out an buy anything....Your dual rec should be able to do a very nice edgey distortion. Try experimenting a bit more, or even swapping guitar p/ups a few times. Stephen carpenter uses EMG's doesn't he?

i think he used EMG's in their newest cd, but in around the fur, i think he used some kind of passive pickups, i think
