This long discontinued box is one of the all-time favorites here at the GuitarGeek test facility. The Guv'nor's ability to manage complex chords and all manner of double note work without crapping out is a tone-filled testament to it's amazing versatility and well-tuned voice. The overdrive itself is fairly clean and resides in the same hallowed realm of the famous TS-9 Tube Screamers. When pushed though, it can muster up a lot more grit, grind, and girth than the TS-9. The real high point of the Guv'nor is the very tweakable 3 band EQ section which manages to tame or tease and any amount of drive you can throw at it. It does have that tiny hint of trademark Marshall glassy-ness and performs best when running through nicer tube amps. The thick metal housing is solid and its low profile design makes for effortless stomping. We've had to replace a few tempermental switches over the years but the procedure is snap if you are solder gun savvy. |
