The legendary Octavia was designed back in 1967 by Roger Mayer. It's distinctive Fuzz and upper Octave blend thrust Mayer into the effects spotlight when Jimi Hendrix made heavy use of it on many of his recordings. The effect sounds simple enough in theory but the Octavia's sonic personality can be molded and shaped by a multitude of playing variables and effect combinations. Hendrix usually placed the Octavia after his Wah and Fuzz so the unit could react to the combination. This is a great starting place for sounds but keep in mind that the Octavia is happy to wreak havoc anywhere in the effects chain. This newer model makes a few evolutionary tweaks to the improve clarity and response by adding feedfoward and a gating effect that were lacking in the original. The classic Mayer Space Ship housing remains unchanged and it is still as sci-fi cool as they day it blasted off. |
