Boss OD-2 Turbo Overdrive - This discontinued number tastefully tackles a few basic overdrive chores in fine fashion. With two modes of crunch to choose between, the OD-2 is a great choice for those needing access to a wide variety of sounds. The normal overdrive is a smooth and fairly tame affair with some nice valvey tube-isms going on. It won't shatter any new sonic barriers, but it's warm and responsive, and is well suited for mellow rock chords or gentle blues or jazz noodlings. The turbo mode, on the other hand, is a fiesty little fella. There is a raw edginess here, that when pushed, borders on being mean. The only thing holding the OD-2 back is that utter lack of overall volume. We literally had to peg the volume knob just to even match our clean volume. It's a real letdown considering both modes have very nice voicings that could really push a clean amp over the edge if only the OD-2 had the power. |
