Another
stunning fuzz pedal from the Roger Mayer fx
line! The Stone fuzz will transport you back
to the 70s in terms of fat tonal colors but
will keep you happy today with its low noise
and massive output.
The classic Mayer spaceship design looks just
as far-out today as it did back in the 60s.
Top this off with a gorgeous silver-textured
paint job and you've got a device that will
make all your little pastel colored effects
very jealous. Don't let the pretty package fool
you though, the tough aluminum-cast design and
top-notch components should stand up to years
of stage abuse. The Stone's sleek lo-profile
design makes for effortless stomping and the
gain and level knobs are cleverly mounted horizontally
along the back of the unit and protected on
both sides by the spaceship's dual thruster
fins. It's a well thought configuration with
very few chances of your precious settings being
knocked out of whack by tapping toes and spastic
stage divers. My only suggestion is that the
Mayer folks add a 0-10 numeric system around
the edges of the horizontally-mounted gain and
level knobs. This way the settings could be
viewed and adjusted, from above, with minimal
guesswork. For all you fuzz-freak purists out
there the Stone's battery-only operation may
tug at your nostalgic heartstrings but for those
of us living in the convienence of the wall-wart
world, the absence of ac power is a little annoying.
Fuzz pedals, as a rule, usually suffer from
fairly unruly behavior. They'll sound fantastic
on single note solos and simple riffs but then
sputter out miserably on full chords. Not so
with the Stone Fuzz! Every nuance of your guitar
playing is recognized, and then responded to,
with equal amounts of dynamics and expression.
This unit handles everything from jazzy 6th
and 7th chords to your typical rock power chords
with ease. The fuzz itself is as warm and fat
as they come with an enjoyable amount of kick
in the low-mids. You might be inclined to write
off the Stone Fuzz as a one trick pony based
on its 2 simple knobs but a little bit of knob
fiddling will change your mind here. By experimenting
with the combined parameters of your guitar
volume and the gain and level knobs of the Stone
Fuzz, you'll open yourself up to a whole new
world of tasty fuzz and overdrive flavors. It's
a very musical device that reacts extremely
well to your picking intensity and subtle guitar
volume changes. Calling up everything from a
whisper soft overdrive to a full-on saturated
fuzz-fest is all within the realm of this little
rocketship. Top that off with an massive output
section and you've got a pedal that not only
sounds great but can also wake up any timid
amplifier out there.
As with all the Roger Mayer stuff you can always
expect a well-built device that sounds as good
as it looks. Within the context of a band or
a mix this well-tuned fuzz finds it's own little
place in the sonic spectrum and should please
anyone looking for a warm 70s tone, an edgier
blues thing, or a super thick stoner rock vibe.
