More
fuzz madness from the fuzz heavy Roger Mayer
headquarters! The Voodoo Axe takes off where
the Original Axis fuzz left off by adding a
tighter low-end, an extra mean output section,
ac power, and a newer compact housing.
This thing is tough! A road worthy aluminum
case takes care of the Voodoo Axe's innards
while a stylish black paint job and white silkscreened
lettering takes care of outer cosmetics. Three
very tactile rubber knobs take care of the gain,
fatness, and output while one stomp switch takes
care of on/off duties. The control knobs themselves
are made fairly pliable rubber which makes a
fantastic surface for making minute onstage
changes with the edges of your shoes. In addition
to the standard input jack the Voodoo offers
outputs jacks to split your signal to two amps
or wherever you want. Add an AC Jack and a red
indicator light mounted on top of the unit and
you've got the picture.
Seems Roger Mayer has taken the best sound fuzz
sounds from all his other boxes, added a well
tuned tone knob, and packed it all into the
Voodoo Axe. The Fatness knob really does the
trick here. Lethal doses of low-end can be added
to the sound without things getting wooly or
sounding like a sick tuba. The outcome is a
very tight, focused, and very usable lower register.
This should perk the attention of old-time fuzz
freaks looking for new flavors as well as the
nu-metal generation of 7 string slinging detuners.
The sonic boundaries of the fuzz have now been
extended to new lows and that's a good thing!
On the other end of the spectrum the Voodoo
Axe can still get nasal with the best of them.
Peg that Fatness knob to the far right and your
back in the realm of classic 60s fuzz tones.
It's not a paper thin sound but a pleasantly
narrow band of warm squelch that sounds simply
amazing.
Nothing against the classic Mayer spaceship
design but i think this smaller, more compact
housing, along with the convenient of AC power
should appeal to fickle pedal buyers who have
limited real estate on their pedal boards or
are sick of buying 9 volt batteries. The Voodoo
Axe advances the legacy of fuzz-dom by addressing
the problems of pedals past and comes up with
a very hip box that can straddle many generations
in terms of both musical style and sound. Plus,
who else could realistically to take the fuzz
pedal into the 21st century besides Roger Mayer?
